How to Declutter Your Kitchen – Part II

January 29, 2009 · Posted in Declutter Daily · 2 Comments

See Part I of this series for an introduction to kitchen decluttering and some tips for decluttering your food.  This post is about decluttering your dishes, kitchen tools, appliances, pots and pans — in other words, the nonfood items in your kitchen.

Most people have accumulated far more houseware items than they need or can use.  The more unnecessary stuff you can eliminate from your home, the easier the rest is to care for and the less work it is to keep your home tidy and orderly.  Be ruthless about getting rid of what you don’t need and you will be amazed at how peaceful your home will become. How to Declutter Your Kitchen – Part I

January 28, 2009 · Posted in Declutter Daily · 4 Comments

Once you add the Declutter Daily Tweak (15 minutes a day of decluttering) to your routine, sooner or later you’ll be ready to start decluttering your kitchen. It’s best to declutter one room at at time. I suggest starting with the kitchen, which is often the least cluttered room.

Imagine what it will be like when your kitchen is free of clutter. A decluttered kitchen is remarkably easy to keep clean and tidy. You will know what food you have on hand, and you will know that it is all fresh. You won’t worry whether the clutter is hiding any old or spilled food that could be attracting bugs or rodents. With your work spaces cleared and a kitchen stocked with only the fresh food that you need, it’s easy to prepare and cook meals, which is better for your budget and for your health. Read more

“How Do I Help a Hoarder?” Some Useful Links

January 26, 2009 · Posted in FAQ, Hoarding · Comment

How can I help my friend or my family member?  People write to me asking this question every day.  They are spouses, children, parents, siblings or friends of people whose hoarding problems are out of control.  They desperately want to help their loved one gain control over the clutter and mess that has overwhelmed them.  NurturingHope.com is primarily a community for those of us who actually struggle with clutter and emotional eating, but I’ve written this post to offer some resources that can be helpful to friends and family.

A hard fact about any problematic behavior — hoarding, smoking, overeating, gambling, shopping addiction, drug addiction, and the list could go on and on — is that people can change their behaviors and their lives, but only if they truly want to.  There is always hope that a person who hoards will come to the desire to change in his or her own time, but in the meantime the family and friends of the hoarder have to figure out how to make peace with the problem.  They have to decide how and whether to offer practical help on a day-to-day basis while the hoarding goes on. An Excellent Documentary About Hoarding

January 25, 2009 · Posted in Feelings, Hoarding · 2 Comments

POSSESSED from Martin Hampton on Vimeo.

This is a short documentary (a little more than 20 minutes) that you can watch in its entirety. Four people in the UK with hoarding issues talk about their lives and their problems with stuff.

Two moments that really struck me:

  • A book hoarder expresses his guilt about the idea of parting with some of his books, “It’s almost as though you’re betraying them.”
  • A woman who feels unable to throw her garbage away says, “It might be a lot of rubbish but nobody is allowed to touch it.”

What were your reactions to the documentary?

16 Nutritious, Easy Crockpot Recipes for Cluttered Kitchens

I was reminiscing lately about the old days when my kitchen was a mess, and the lack of homecooked meals as a result.  I hardly ever cooked because the counters, table and sink were so cluttered all the time that I couldn’t really begin to think about putting together a meal.  So we ate a lot of junky takeout food.  Today I was thinking that it would not have been that hard to combine a few ingredients in the crockpot for a hot meal later in the day.
