What are probiotics? We all have “good” intestinal bacteria that help us digest our food, stimulate our immune system and protect us against “bad” bacteria that can cause disease and digestive problems. The good intestinal bacteria are called probiotics. You can supplement the good bacteria in your gut by eating yogurt (with live cultures) every day, or by taking an acidophilus supplement in tablet, capsule or powder form.
Scientists are starting to think that probiotics can play a role in preventing weight gain or even supporting weight loss. Antibiotics (which kill the “good” bacteria in your body right along with the “bad”) have been used in the agriculture industry for years to make animals gain weight faster. This has led researchers to hypothesize that antibiotic medications may make people more likely to gain weight. So while it’s critical to take antibiotics when prescribed by your doctor, it’s extra important to follow up a course of antibiotics with probiotics if weight is an issue.
When you choose to add this Tweak to your routine, make it a daily habit to either eat a serving of yogurt or take a probiotics supplement. It’s a delicious way to improve your health!
Remember:
Choose no more than one tweak per month – don’t try to pile them on! Practicing a single tweak for at least a full month gives you the best chance of forming a real habit and life change. Do not try to add another tweak until the previous tweak has become a habitual part of your life (this can sometimes take longer than a month).
